IMPERIUM is based on those features that have traditionally defined the work of La Fura dels Baus: the use of non-conventional spaces; multidisciplinary scenic language based on predominance of the body and technology; invasion of the intimate space of the spectator - the audience becomes a fundamental part of the show, similar to the Greek choir; and a theme that focuses on the conflicts between the individual and the group.
La Fura’s performances inevitably attract an audience not usually interested in the scenic arts, thanks to the sincerity and power they project.
The creative process of IMPERIUM was born as a result of the need to act out a protest against the different forms of imperialism. Imperialism is understood as a form of relationship between two entities, individuals or societies, in which one subjugates the other or otherwise destroys it. Dialogue, listening and diversity are words that are taboo for the imperialist. Differences are not seen as an opportunity but rather as a threat,
while domination models are promoted as the basic mode of relationship between human beings. This is accomplished either by subtle forms of physical and mental domestication or by pure cannibalism sustained by war metaphors.
The imperialist’s final objective is to convert or cancel the different, justified by a simplified and narrow vision of reality that responds to the logic of fear and power.
IMPERIUM puts the premise of progress and of human improvement in doubt. IMPERIUM questions what we are told, who is telling us and why they smile so much when they tell us.
These concepts lend form to the physical, emotional and mental journey that the IMPERIUM spectator experiences.
