JÜRGEN MÜLLER was born in Weiterdingen, the south of Germany, in 1955. After finishing his studies in Germany, in 1979 he moves to Barcelona, Spain, to study mime and contemporary dance at the Instituto del Teatro de Barcelona, completing successfully his studies in 1982.
In autumn of the same year he meets up with a mixed group of artists: musicians, visual artists, theatre makers. They begin to work in the tradition of the “passacalles”, a kind of street performances. Very soon they revolutionize this format and bring into it an urban note with a strong punk attitude: the collective LA FURA DELS BAUS, Jürgen Müller being one of the founding members.
From the 80‘s until 1994 Müller and the other members of the group are developing and executing the FURA method of creating work collectively – the concepts of creator, director and performer are all one. They develop the Furan Language characterized by the use of non-conventional spaces; multidisciplinary scenic language based on predominance of the body and technology; invasion of the intimate space of the spectator - the audience becomes a fundamental part of the show, similar to the Greek choir; and a theme that focuses on the conflicts between the individual and the group. Müller participates in Accions (1984) the first show to use “Furan language” followed by Suz/O/Suz (1985), Tier Mon (1988), Noun (1990), MTM (1994) and ØBS (2000).
In the 90’s besides continuing the work with LA FURA DELS BAUS, Jürgen Müller experiments and reaches out to collaborate with artists working in different theatre fields and contexts. He started as well to appoint the position of director and co-director within FURA itself. He became interested in working with new media, which resulted in research and presentations of digital theatre projects. Some of these works are listed below.
In 2000 Jürgen Müller dives into the world and philosophy of Greek tragedies. He meets and works with Irene Pappas and challenges the old forms through his approach of FURAN LANGUAGE. This leads to a remarkable staging of “Las Baccantes”, with a choir of more than 100 performers in Bolzano, Italy.
The result of these vast experiences is shown in Jürgen Müller’s recent creation of FURAN LANGUAGE show “IMPERIUM” which premiered in 2007 in Beijing.
